Festival off to flying start

July 13th, 2008

Well Lafrowda 2008 is well and truly underway. The ‘warm-up’ event, the Let’s Play Records Masked Ball was a great night - good music, decidedly dodgy dancing and some downright blatant exhibitionism!

Friday saw the traditional Lafrowda Quiz return to it’s spiritual home of the Queens Arms. This proved to be a popular move as the place was packed to the proverbial rafters. As usual round these parts the quiz was fiercely contested with much grumbling about questions being too hard (usually the sign of a good quiz)!

Our ‘Stars in your eyes’ event has become a Satuday night regular at Lafrowda. This year it was brought up to date with the addition of a ballroom dancing competition, ‘Dreckly Come Dancing’. The 6 competing couples have been training since Feb and it showed in their polished performances. Debbie and John were awarded first prize by the judges, but a huge well done to all - you were all winners. It was standing room only in the school hall and the brilliant audience were treated to performances showing what a wealth of talent we have here in St Just. A big thank you and well done to everyone who took part. The audience voted John the winner with his awesome interpretation of Robbie Williams - a performance sure to be talked about for weeks to come!

There’s no let up today - the sun is shining so bring a picnic to the Plen for the Ceilidh. The Tinners will be providing the music and calling the steps starting at 5pm…………see you there!

The first community workshops have started

July 5th, 2008

The first community workshops have started, the schools workshops are well underway, and the first Lafrowda event, BYO disco by Vinyl King Bruce Davies has happened, so I guess we’re now ‘On Programme’.

The schools are working away with their artists on sculpture, animation, kites , flags and withy images, and Cape kicked off with a whole-school, whole-day arts extravaganza last monday which included filmaking, drama and willow image making, a whole lotta kids doing a whole lotta workshops.

Community workshops began in a more low key way with banner and costume making on Thursday at the textile room at Cape. This is a new venue for us, and fantastically resourced, but the ’shop suffered from being early and the first of a long list of activities, and it didn’t pick up until it’s third and last day, today, when it became a hive of fashion and design activity. Look out for Hello Kitty. Man, she is pink.

Printmaking began today at Nancherrow - Jesse Leroy Smith is teaching us the basics of dry point printing - brilliantly easy to do, there were two year olds with finished prints at the end of the day, but it produces interesting, professional, finished objects. WANTED posters - to be posted around town, look out for the luggage labels. He’ll be doing it all again tomorrow at 11, so head on down and tell St Just what you WANT.

Liz and Graham are up at the Drill Hall for the next two weeks willowing around - if you want to know what this year’s processional images are, that’s the place to be. They are there to teach you all you need to know about building giants. Go and see what Coastwatch are up to, apart from guarding our seaways.

BYO night was a huge success absolutely despite being on a miserable night. Music-fab, decor-outstanding, dancing-deplorable. Can’t beat it with a big stick, long reign King Bruce.

Highlights of next week are mud and sound sculpting at St Just primary, Scarecrow trails at St Buryan, playground games at the pre schools, and grown up sculpture trailling and poetry on Friday. See timetable for details, and come along, they are fun, they are free, and there are biscuits. See you there.
