A Feast of Festivals

Lafrowda is proud to be a part of the Penwith Festivals Partnership.

Set up in 2005 by Penwith District Council with support from Arts Council England, the Partnership supports community festivals across the district. Local events need more than just willing volunteers and a bit of grant funding. They also have to address issues like health and safety, licensing, security and increasingly-complex administration.

Through the Partnership organisers have been able to share experiences, benefit from expert advice in areas such as risk assessment, and borrow kit - from public address systems to yellow jackets.

Obviously, money is important too. Penwith District Council recognises the benefits which festivals bring, and supports us with a direct grant towards overheads. The Council has also secured an Arts Council grant for the Partnership which provides match-funding for performers’ fees, training events and joint marketing materials.

Lafrowda regularly receives feedback that you would all like ‘more street theatre‘. Thanks to this year’s match-funding, we have a full programme of street entertainment from on Lafrowda Day. Thank you, Penwith, for your support for Roo’d, Sky Larks, and The Sneakers.

Roo’d

Roo\'dAll the way from Australia to Penwith? It’s just a hop, skip and a jump for Roo’d.

Forget walkabout, this is boundabout. Giant bouncing kangaroos on powerskip stilts, they can leap up to a metre off the ground and two metres along it.

A crossover of outback macho with inner city punk savvy, they’ve become a favourite at festivals around the world. Always naughty, never nasty. Always Roo’d, never offensive.

You just won’t know where they’ll pop up next. Two big kangaroos, with big personalities to match, on the loose in St Just on Lafrowda afternoon.

Sky Larks

Lanyon DragonSky Larks’ magical aerial puppets have paid many visits to Lafrowda, and inspired countless local children to learn circus skills.

To keep up with Penwith’s other boom tourist towns, and boost St Just’s smart new image, this year they’re bringing a pair of ravenous seagulls to clean up the streets of stray pasties and chips. And look out for the return of the Pocket Monsters. In your face. Up your **** whatever. Wherever they go they’ll be soft, fluffy and very, very long . . . . . tailed.

If you miss them here, catch their workshops and performances all summer at the Magic in the Skies days at Land’s End.

The Sneakers

The SneakersThey played one of their first ever gigs at the first Lafrowda Day in 1997. From there, they went on to find international stardom.

They’ve played in the Middle East, the Orient and the New World, and now they’re returning to the scene of their first great triumph - St Just. Ten years on, and hot foot from touring the world, the Sneakers are once again back on home ground for Lafrowda.

With a wicked blend of favourite classics, foot-stomping rock and roll, and carefully-crafted comedy, they’re guaranteed to get audiences of all ages singing and dancing in the street.
