Media Release - 9 July 2007
St Just’s Elemental Lafrowda Festival week starts on Friday
Lafrowda Festival week kicks off on Friday evening with a fundraising quiz in the St Just Rugby Club. As usual, the quiz is based on this year’s festival theme - Elements.
On Saturday evening the activity moves to Cape Cornwall School for ‘Tears in Your Eyes’ - family variety, with local people doing their best to imitate ‘Stars in Your Eyes’ along with cabaret acts, a raffle and a round of bingo. More for the family on Sunday, when there’ll be a ceilidh in the Plen-an-Gwarry from 17.00 to 20.00 with barn dancing to live music - and that’s just the start of the week.
In a packed programme of local entertainment, there’s something for everyone. For those who like to get involved, there’s line dancing, tea dancing, Diddley Dee and open mic nights. Alternatively you can stretch your brain with a quiz, or have a laugh at Lafrowda’s first ever comedy night.
Music lovers will enjoy another first - a concert by the Marazion Apollo Choir. They’ll be singing in the Plen-an-Gwary on Wednesday, or the Methodist Chapel if it’s a wet night. Festival week also has scheduled performances by the Foggy Bottom String Band, the Boycott Boys and Bates Motel.
For drama fans, there’s a performance of ‘Tin and Fishes’ - Pauline Sheppard’s Play about St Just in the 70’s. This takes place in Pendeen Parish Rooms - a new venue for Lafrowda. Another new event will be the performance by Ash Tree Actors, who are reviving the tradition of the strolling players, while old favourites, Cape Players, will present their production of ‘Sherlock’s Excellent Adventure’.
There are also community workshops taking place in the town in readiness for Lafrowda Day on Saturday 21 July. The schools are awash with banners and withies, and each evening there is the sound of musicians rehearsing. The local Recreation Centre has been turned into a studio for building processional sculptures, and this Saturday (14 July) Penzamba will hold a workshop there for anyone who would like to join them in the parades.
St Just’s Lafrowda Festival offers a programme of local events to please every taste. Full listings of the events during Lafrowda Week, and all the performers who are taking part on Lafrowda Day can be found on the festival website - www.lafrowda-festival.co.uk
