Street dancing in St Just on Lafrowda Day . . . and that’s just the start

Saturday 21 July is Lafrowda Day in St Just. Already the town is buzzing in preparation for a day showcasing the best local creative talent with a mix of live music, street theatre, family fun and fantastic processions. The theme this year will be elements.

Thanks to the continued support of Penwith District Council’s Festivals Partnership initiative, once again there will be some special guests to thrill the crowds. The Partnership has been able to access match funding from the Arts Council and Lafrowda has received £1000 towards street entertainment.

Hot-footed from the Piazza in Covent Garden, X-treme Street are a group of physical performers with talents that rise above those of the average person. Performers Courtney and Mike will be bringing break dancing, body popping and acrobatics to the streets of St Just.

Hodman Dodmanott and Sally Forth are an interactive puppetry walkabout featuring an elderly couple of pint-sized ramblers. They’ve ventured out in search of fame, fortune and friendship, with their possessions strapped to their backs.

Alongside these special guests, there’ll also be old favourites Sky Larks, and a fire-breather at the end of the evening.

Lafrowda spokesperson Barbara Smith explained: ‘This is the third year we’ve had match-funding though PDC’s Festivals Partnership to bring high quality street acts into Penwith. It’s not just great entertainment, it also inspires local young people – something very close to Lafrowda’s heart. This year, the funding has helped us take that one step further. Both X-treme Street and the fire breather are running workshops in the town to share some of their skills.’

Lafrowda Day is the culmination of the week-long Lafrowda Festival with a programme of local events to please every taste. Full listings of the events during Lafrowda Week, and all the performers who are taking part on Lafrowda Day can be found on the festival website – www.lafrowda-festival.co.uk
