Cinema Lafrowda – February Film Festival returns…….

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Cinema Lafrowda is looking forward to its annual February Film Festival, now in its third year! We will be showing the usual mix of films from arthouse to off beat, comedy to curious, and off course our very popular childrens’ matinee. This year with our Olympic theme of “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, we will be getting you into training early with a smattering of films with a sporty twist, the usual large screen, licensed bar, and themed(ish) drinks and snacks making our Saturday film nights an ideal way to banish those February blues. All films are free, but donations are of course, most welcome.
So get yourselves braced and ready to get down to the St Just WI hall for great films and more cakes than are good for you!

4th Feb, 7.15pm – When We Were Kings (1996) – cert PG
Academy Award-winning documentary, about the famous “Rumble in
the Jungle” Muhammad Ali / George Foreman fight in Zaire in 1974,
with everyone from Norman Mailer to James Brown along
for the ride. A milestone in boxing and black history

11th Feb, 7.15pm -Breaking Away (1979)– cert 12
Another Academy Award winner, set in a 1970s Indiana
college town. This charming film centers on the aspirations
of four local boys, and in particular the obsession of one of
them with the Italian cycling team. A touching and funny
coming-of-age story, Breaking Away is a delightful treat!

18th Feb, 7.15pm – Run Lola Run (1998 Ger subtitles) – cert 15
With 20 minutes to gather 100,000 DM or confront the wrath
of his gang boss, desperate, Manni phones his girlfriend, Lola…
This film’s energy riffs on an engaging love story and really
human performances, while offering a series of what-ifs and
a blood stirring soundtrack. Not only does Lola run, she takes
this hyperkinetic pop culture firecracker of a film with her.

25th Feb 2.45pm – National Velvet (1944)– cert U
Winsome, horsey family fun. This is a charmer for boys
and girls of all ages, with a captivating performance
from the young Liz Taylor as Velvet. MATINEE.

25th Feb 7.15pm – Senna (2010)– cert 12A

The story of racing driver Ayrton Senna – charming, talented,
mouthy and dead at 34 after a crash at the San Marino
Grand prix in May 1994. This moving and often funny film
brims with energy and passion. Asif Kapadia’s film is so
skilfully put together that its portrayal of a complex,
charismatic figure will grip even those with no particular interest in the sport

MARBLE FAIRY CANCELLED

Friday, July 15th, 2011

We are sorry to have to announce that due to circumstances beyond their control, Marble Fairy will not be able to appear on Saturday as advertised. The band are very sorry and apologise to everyone who was looking forward to seeing them at Lafrowda.
As you can imagine, this has left as rather large hole in the schedule. However, we are pleased to announce that Lafrowda favourites FRESHLY SQUEEZED will now headline in the Plen-an-Gwarry at 10.30pm. We are grateful to the band for stepping in at such short notice and are sure they will provide the perfect end to the day.
Freshly Squeezed are an 8-piece funk / soul group from North Cornwall / Devon.

LAFROWDA JAM CANCELLED

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Unfortunately, the organisers have decided to cancel the Lafrowda Jam event planned to take place this Thursday, 7th July at the Nancherrow Centre. The level of enthusiasm for participating in the event was not as great as anticipated, and we were not able to put a full quota of muisicians on. The organisers feel it will benefit our young musicians more if a separate event is held later in the year.
2 young bands will be asked to perform on Lafrowda Day – watch this space for further announcements.
We appreciate that this news will cause disappointment, and apologise for this and any inconvenience caused.

Lafrowda 2011 gets underwayhey!!

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Yes, as we speak the first Lafrowda Event, the traditional quiz, is underway at the Queens Arms in Botallack.
Of course, the workshop programme is already in full swing, and folk are getting creative all over the place. The fruits of their labours are emerging- pop into the library to see the Japanese Story Boxes made by the children this afternoon, or keep an eye on the verges and pavements around the area as the weird and wonderful start appearing.
Bunting is up (in renewed abundance thanks to an earlier group of intrepid workers), and in every space preparations are reaching their climax – not least for the dancing spectacular of the Lafrowda Show next Sat (9th).

Don’t forget, follow the ‘Lafrowda 2011′ link to the left to find all details, times, places etc.

Look lively, look sharp, look East!!
